Current State and Limitations of Temporal Cognition

Present-day LLM-based AI agents acquire time information by utilizing external APIs and timestamps. However, this is merely data verification and differs significantly from the dynamic sense of time experienced by humans, such as "what time is it right now" or "how much time has elapsed." Consequently, if delays occur during task execution, it becomes difficult to intuitively assess the impact and recover accordingly.

Future Technical Challenges

In order for AI agents to execute long-term planning in the real world moving forward, it is necessary to integrate temporal context into the model architecture itself. Going beyond simple data referencing, whether models can internally conceptualize a timeline will be the key to the evolution of truly practical AI agents.
