Recent research has revealed that engaging in a dialogue with an AI chatbot is more effective at reducing deeply rooted beliefs in conspiracy theories than conventional factual materials. The findings demonstrate that a mere seven-minute interaction can induce positive shifts in an individual's belief system.
The study was conducted through two independent experiments. Researchers compared a group presented with a list of facts related to a specific conspiracy theory against a group that interacted with an AI chatbot. Rather than outright dismissing the user's claims, the chatbot played a role in correcting logical fallacies through a conversational process that presented specific, tailored counter-evidence.
Traditional methods involving the presentation of factual materials often trigger psychological reactance, leading to counter-argumentation. In contrast, the conversational AI approach utilized empathetic and personalized responses, which likely suppressed users' defensive psychological reactions while encouraging them to reconsider the information. Even within a short span of seven minutes, interactive information delivery demonstrated superior persuasiveness compared to static materials.
These research findings present new possibilities for utilizing generative AI as a countermeasure against misinformation.
