Google has signed a new agreement with next-generation geothermal energy developer Fervo Energy to procure 400 megawatts (MW) of power. This is a strategic initiative to secure sustainable and reliable carbon-free energy for the rapidly growing energy demands of data centers.
This contract pertains to power supply utilizing Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) promoted by Fervo. The two companies have a history of collaboration, and this 400MW scale marks the full-scale commercial deployment extending far beyond traditional geothermal power generation.
Fervo's technology applies horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques cultivated in the oil and gas industry, enabling power generation in regions where it was previously difficult. Unlike solar and wind power, which are weather-dependent, its stability as a "baseload power source" capable of maintaining a constant output 24/7 is a critical advantage for power-intensive tech companies.
