Global Brain, through its "Niterra Hydrogen Forest Investment Limited Partnership," has announced an investment in Hertha Metals, Inc., a U.S.-based startup pioneering innovative steelmaking technologies. Hertha Metals focuses on the production of high-purity iron—a critical component for the global energy transition—using a proprietary, low-cost manufacturing process designed for a decarbonized future.

The Technical Edge: A Single-Step Revolution

Founded in 2022, Hertha Metals has successfully overhauled traditional, multi-stage steelmaking by developing a technology that produces steel and high-purity iron in a single step. Their process utilizes a unique continuous reactor capable of handling all grades of iron ore, resulting in a 25% reduction in production costs compared to conventional blast furnace methods.

Beyond cost efficiency, the environmental impact is significant. The technology reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 50% when using natural gas, and by up to 98% when utilizing hydrogen. Hertha Metals has already completed technical verification at its pilot facility in Texas, which currently operates at a scale of 360 tons per year.

Strategic Growth and the Path to a Hydrogen Society

The newly raised capital will be directed toward the construction of "Hertha Chalyx," a large-scale commercial facility with a planned annual production capacity of 10,000 tons. This project aims to establish a stable supply of high-purity iron—the raw material required for rare-earth magnets used in electric vehicles (EVs) and wind turbines—thereby strengthening the resilience of the U.S. industrial supply chain.

Furthermore, through its partnership with Niterra Co., Ltd. (formerly NGK Spark Plug Co., Ltd.), Hertha Metals intends to accelerate the decarbonization of the global steel industry and advance the realization of a future hydrogen-based economy.
