On August 22, 2026, the Japan Pharmaceutical & BioScience Society (Japan PBSS) hosted its second Drug Discovery Ecosystem Series event, titled "Bench to Bed, and Beyond - Drug Discovery Startup Funding: From Founding to IPO and Beyond Growth Strategies," at the Nihonbashi Life Science Hub. The event focused on the essential elements of funding and post-IPO strategies for the growth of drug discovery startups, providing a platform for the sharing of expert insights.
Held in a hybrid format with both in-person and online attendance, the event drew a total of 185 participants (approximately 100 in-person and 85 online). Feedback from the post-event survey was exceptionally high, recording an average satisfaction rating of 4.48 out of 5, with 64% of participants responding that they were "extremely satisfied." Venture and startup representatives made up the largest group of attendees at 35%, followed by venture capital and consulting (22%), R&D and contract manufacturing (16%), and pharmaceutical companies (14%), bringing together a diverse cross-section of the ecosystem.
Japan PBSS is an expert community dedicated to promoting knowledge exchange in the pharmaceutical and bioscience sectors. The event featured lively discussions regarding current investment environments and actual fundraising realities, reaffirming the organization's role as a critical hub connecting industry, academia, government, investors, and pharmaceutical companies. Participants demonstrated a particularly high level of interest in the practical realities of fundraising and growth strategies.
Incorporating feedback gathered from this session, Japan PBSS plans to further explore themes vital to the next-generation drug discovery ecosystem, including AI-driven drug discovery, the utilization of CDMOs/CROs, policy challenges, and overseas markets. The next event, provisionally titled "Bench to Bedside through M&A," is scheduled for February 20, 2027.
