Metro Weather, a deep-tech startup originating from Kyoto University, has successfully raised ¥1.5 billion in the first close of its Series B funding round. This latest injection of capital brings the company's total funding to ¥3.56 billion. The firm aims to reach a total of ¥2.5 billion by the conclusion of its full Series B round.
Founded in 2015, Metro Weather specializes in remote sensing and proprietary signal processing. The company is best known for developing "Doppler LiDAR," which provides real-time 3D visualization of wind conditions. Leveraging this foundation, the company is now focusing on the development of an "Object Detection LiDAR." This technology is highly anticipated for its ability to bridge critical detection gaps that remain challenging for conventional radar systems.
The proceeds from this round are earmarked for accelerating the commercialization of the company's Object Detection LiDAR. As security concerns regarding unauthorized drone incursions into sensitive facilities continue to escalate, Metro Weather is partnering with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) to fast-track the implementation of these solutions for defense and critical infrastructure protection. By combining MHI’s extensive expertise in defense equipment development with the agile innovation capabilities of a startup, both companies aim to address pressing national security challenges and bolster essential societal infrastructure.
