It has been revealed that OpenAI and several other AI development companies have procured tens of thousands of Apple's Mac mini desktop computers to train AI agents capable of operating computers autonomously.
The newly procured hardware will serve as a training infrastructure for "computer-using agents" that mimic and execute tasks typically performed by humans on a PC, such as launching software, editing documents, and browsing the web. The goal is to enhance the process by which AI models perceive environments through graphical user interfaces (GUIs) and execute actions.
While conventional agent training has relied on cloud-based virtual environments, utilizing physical Mac minis enables a more accurate simulation of complex user interfaces and application operations within the macOS environment. In particular, the power efficiency and performance of Apple Silicon (M-series chips) are believed to play a crucial role in cost optimization during large-scale parallel training.
Companies plan to build physical hardware clusters to enhance the ability of agents to complete complex workflows on PCs. This is expected to accelerate the phase where AI transcends being a mere language processing tool and is integrated into society as a practical software operation assistant.
