TerraPower, the next-generation nuclear energy company founded by Bill Gates, is accelerating the deployment of energy supply solutions utilizing its Natrium reactor technology to meet the surging electricity demands of AI data centers.
At the core of this initiative is the Natrium reactor system developed by TerraPower. Its defining feature is the integration of a molten salt energy storage system. This design allows for flexible adjustment of the reactor's output, successfully combining the stable baseload power required by data centers with energy delivery during peak demand.
With the rapid adoption of generative AI, power consumption by data centers has increased dramatically, creating limits to stable supply through conventional renewable energy sources alone. TerraPower's Natrium technology employs liquid sodium as a coolant, enabling high-efficiency power generation at higher temperatures. Furthermore, because its storage system allows for output control, it is expected to serve as a robust infrastructure foundation that complements highly intermittent renewable energy sources.
TerraPower is currently proceeding with the construction of a demonstration reactor aimed at commercialization. The company aims to establish a next-generation power supply framework that achieves both decarbonization and stable energy delivery for massive power consumers such as AI companies and cloud providers.
