It has been revealed that Tesla is shutting down its "Solar Roof" integrated photovoltaic roofing business. The product was launched to the market as an ambitious initiative—not merely placing conventional solar panels on top of a roof, but making the roofing material itself generate electricity. However, the company has now made the decision to halt the product's deployment.
The affected product is Tesla's Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) solution for residential properties, known as the Solar Roof. Although designed as tile-type solar panels aimed at balancing aesthetics with power generation efficiency, the product is now expected to be removed from the company's portfolio.
Initially, the Solar Roof gained significant attention as a more stylish and durable alternative to traditional panel installations. However, in practice, it required advanced installation techniques, and many projects suffered from prolonged completion times, exposing logistical and labor-shortage challenges in the field. Analysts also point out that the manufacturing costs were extremely high, making it difficult to maintain economic viability compared to more affordable rack-mounted panels.
Moving forward, Tesla plans to concentrate its management resources on its core electric vehicle business and energy storage solutions (such as the Powerwall). This withdrawal once again highlights the inherent difficulties of the hardware business—specifically, how crucial scalability and consideration of installation effort and costs are for products involving on-site construction, such as residential equipment.
