Former engineers from PG&E (Pacific Gas and Electric Company) are advancing a project to accurately visualize underground infrastructure data on digital maps. Often described as a "Google Maps for the underground," this platform aims to transform traditionally uncertain data regarding buried utilities into precise, reliable information for construction sites and public infrastructure maintenance.
This platform collects and integrates data on underground utilities such as gas pipelines, power lines, and communication cables, presenting them as an intuitive digital map. This makes it possible to check the status of subterranean assets with the same precision as surface-level maps, thereby reducing the risk of accidents during excavation work.
Traditional underground infrastructure management has often relied on outdated paper blueprints or individual memory, making excavation accidents and project delays major challenges. Leveraging the specialized expertise of former utility engineers, this system provides a data foundation designed to eliminate information asymmetries regarding the underground. It is expected to significantly reduce infrastructure management costs in urban development while improving safety.
Moving forward, the project plans to expand its data collection range and enhance high-precision modeling capabilities, accelerating adoption in large-scale urban construction projects and infrastructure renewal work.
